As a Mom of two very busy little boys, I had loved the quick and easy use of the pop top style soup can versus the old fashioned can that required a can opener. That quickly changed this morning when I discovered how big of a danger they pose. Our dog had found something in the yard and when I went to figure out what he had discovered, I found one of our outdoor cats dead. Living in the country, it is not unusual to lose one of my outdoor fur babies. It was the manner in which Sneakers died that broke my heart. His head had become lodged in a soup can and I can only imagine how horrible and scared he was in his last moments. I had never considered the newer pop top style cans dangerous. Looking at the design, now I can see how easy it is for an animal to become stuck and suffocate from this style of can. Even with rinsing, all cans will still have a food smell that can be detected by an animal. Cans may sit for some time at recycling centers while waiting to be recycled and they definitely sit for a long time if sent to a landfill. Please completely remove the tops of all cans! It may take you a few extra moments, but it just may save a life. I really wish that I had known about this sooner. Sneakers would still be here with us.

Many of you have been with Earth Folk from its humble beginnings when the store consisted of some smudge sticks, bumper stickers, and a few pieces of jewelry housed in a small wooden box. With all of you, we grew and changed over the years. Now it is time for the next step in Earth Folk’s evolution. For the past few months, we have been searching for a different home for Earth Folk. We have been looking for a location that will provide for all of our needs while still maintaining a home-like feel. We still had not found the location that was just right when life threw us a few challenges. Due to some heating issues, we now have no option but to close the store in our current location. This does not mean that Earth Folk is closing. We are moving! As with any change, there will be some growing pains. I had mentioned the search for the absolutely perfect location earlier and during a conversation at home trying to figure out how to proceed, the best solution presented itself. Since our slogan, or tagline for Earth Folk has always been, “Your home for Earth-friendly spiritual and every day products”, what better location for the store and all of our future plans than our home.
What does this evolution mean for all of you? You will continue to receive the same great service and wonderful products brought to you at the best price possible. We will still host discussion groups and other events. Only now, we will be able to offer more than ever before. By locating the store at our home, we will have the room for a fresh herb garden to harvest organically grown herbs for your cooking and spiritual needs. Also in the plans; a labyrinth and meditation garden, bee hives, and other surprises to be revealed in time.
The one downside to this plan is that we will no longer be located in Sioux Falls. We live in Northwest Iowa, approximately 20 miles from Sioux Falls. There is a bright spot for those who are not able to travel outside of Sioux Falls. We will offer free weekly deliveries to Sioux Falls and surrounding communities. We will need to come into town at least once a week and we can easily bring your purchase to your door. Our website is going to undergo a complete metamorphosis and be updated to show all available products to make your shopping from home easier. For those who like the sensation of seeing and feeling the products, we will have a store set up at home and ready for you as well.
Now to address those growing pains I mentioned. This move is going to take some time. We have some remodeling to do at home before the storefront is back up and running, as well as landscaping to bring the gardens to life. Don’t worry! We will still be available for any products that you need, and will still offer tarot readings on occasion. To request a product or set up an appointment for a reading, all you have to do is call or email us. Our email address is: email@example.com I will update the telephone number as soon as the new phone line is set up.
We will be closing our current location at 310 West 18th Street, Suite A in Sioux Falls the 24th of January so now is the time to stock up on your supplies. We will be having some great sales to prepare for the move so stop down soon.
It has been so great finding all like minded individuals in the area and we look forward to continuing those friendships and making many more. Bright blessings everyone!
We will be closed December 23rd – December 26th. We look forward to seeing you on the 27th!

SIOUX FALLS, SD – Earth Folk owner Jonathan Meemken and Sioux Falls Police detectives are looking over surveillance video from inside the store. It shows someone hurling a huge rock through the store’s front window at about a quarter to one Tuesday morning.
“It’s sad when you see something like this happen. All I have to do is hope the person learns from this mistake,” Meemken said.
Meemken originally didn’t think the vandal took anything. Then he realized a decorative knife, painted with a mermaid that was stuck to a plaque was missing.
“I had cast iron pots up there worth more than the knife by itself. I had crystal balls up in the window. I had pewter dragons in the window. What they took was kind of stupid in my opinion, of everything else to take,” Meemken said.
Meemken’s store has been open in Sioux Falls for just less than a year. He says this incident will not force him to close his doors.
However, he is worried the boulder is more of a statement than about the theft. Sometimes, new age shops are targeted by those who don’t understand the earth-friendly concept.
“It’ll take more. Someone’s going to have to have a lot more stones than this to scare me away,” Meemken said.
Now, this business owner is hopeful karma will come around on the thief. And if that’s not enough, he’s turned over what his cameras captured to authorities.
“That’s the great thing about surveillance equipment. You can zoom in with digital photos and catch the person who did it,” Meemken said.
Until then, this store will remain open, and the window will be replaced.
The store owner says he’s not going to throw away the rock that crashed through the window. Instead, he plans to keep it, and might even make it into a decorative piece of some kind.
